5th annual YGB awards celebrate Nina Simone

Some 26 entrepreneurs and business leaders were selected for special honour at last week’s 5th annual YGB Entrepreneurial Awards ceremony held at the Tribeca Rooftop, New York City.

Among them were Patricia Chin, co-founder of VP Records and founder of Riddim Driven Clothing; Kevin Carr, vice president of Community and Player Programs, NBA; Michael Armstrong, senior vice president and general manager, BET International; Randolph Sturrup, co-founder and CEO, Minna Mae Productions, Creators and executive producers of the reality series “Harlem Heights” on BET Networks; Alison Roach, president-CEO, Alison Roach Group, LLC; Leonard E. Burnett, Jr., and Brett Wright, co-CEO of Uptown Media Group and Vibe Lifestyle Network; Winsome Leahing, owner of Salon Leahing; and Larry Scott Blackmon, deputy commissioner Community Partnerships, New York City Parks Department, whose dad and presenter is veteran recording artiste, Larry Blackmon, Sr., from the multiple award-winning R&B/Funk Group CAMEO.

Carl Gray, founder of the YGB Awards said, “This year we dedicate our 5th annual award ceremony to Nina Simone, an inspirational and prolific African American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and civil rights activist. It is truly an honor and privilege to celebrate one of Black History’s icons.”

Alicia Aberdeen, artist at Abo Creations, whose portrait of Nina Simone was prominently displayed at the awards ceremony, and Colin Williams, photographer and director received the first ever Nina Simone Artistic Excellence Awards.

The portrait of Nina Simone will be auctioned on EBay with proceeds going to the Nina Simone Foundation and the YGB Awards organization .

The evening’s entertainers were songstess Diandra Patrick and Shermain Jeremy, who competed in both Miss Universe and Miss World Pageants as Miss Antigua and Barbuda, and thirteen year old sensational rapper, Astro-The Astronomical Kid.
